The Federal Quantum Timing System (codename System 10, originally Project 812) is a covert federal system in Vekllei that maintains synchronised atomic clocks across Vekllei’s republics, providing sub-nanosecond timing precision for navigation, weapons guidance, acoustic triangulation and secure authentication. The network operates through fibre-optic links coordinating dozens of clock installations, creating timing infrastructure independent of satellite navigation systems that could be jammed or destroyed during conflict. It also supports a number of legitimate commercial purposes, though its scope and weaponisation remain a secret.
The network comprises 47 caesium atomic clocks distributed across the republics, with primary installations at NSRE facilities and backup clocks at military bases. Each clock maintains accuracy to within one second per 300 million years. The Federal Military Establishment’s Maritime Service vessels and Littoral Service craft use System 10 as a GPS-independent navigation reference, calculating positions through inertial navigation and astronomical fixes calibrated against the timing network. Missile guidance systems use the same timing signals for trajectory calculations.
Beyond military applications, the timing network underpins industrial activity across the commons economy, since factories in different republics run against the same clock, as do transport schedules and power distribution. The Bureau of Materials and Supply depends on it to ensure components produced in different republics arrive simultaneously for assembly, which is the sort of logistical precision a moneyless economy requires in place of price signals.
