Government cocktails.

“Afternoon tea” — workplace aperitifs — are a common feature of the country, since the social drink is the lubricant of a social economy.

Alcohol is an interesting problem for Vekllei, which does not use money in ordinary life. While price pressure hardly dissuades alcoholism in the real world, it’s still worth thinking about what “free alcohol” could do to a country. A lot of the answer is to socialise drinking and curb private indulgence. You can’t stop liquor — and you wouldn’t want to, anyway. It’s trivial to make yourself. So perhaps limiting drinking at home and turning it into a regular, normal and social practice could help curb moderate overconsumption, if not the alcos.

A drop of pinot is good for body and spirit. High school students in Vekllei get a cup of wine with their lunch. Shaping normal consumption is probably more effective than targeting the drink itself, or the hardcore alcoholics who will duck prohibition anyway.
